Hotkey conflicts with IE

Realizing now that the hotkey can be disabled, I originally supposed this issue wouldn't come up much because I imagined most users being "point and click" afficionados. Maybe not (or they just noticed before I did), but I do know that being in IT for most of my life has made keyboard commands an intimate (and highly automatic) part of what I do. After installing DebugBar, I almost immediately ran into a problem with its hotkey (Alt+D). In Firefox, which I use almost exclusively, Alt+D puts your cursor in the Address bar and highlights the text. In Windows, Safari is the same way, I've customized Opera's hotkeys, and IE just (normally) does the same thing until DB is installed.

Honestly...and I can understand the choice...I think (now that I've found that it can be changed / disabled) I would have much preferred a one-time popup that two of IE's hotkeys had been overridden (http://www.accessible-devices.com/IE7HotKeys.html), and here's how to find "Preferences." Maybe I missed it, maybe I should have RTFM, but...with the kind of work I find myself doing, sometimes it's the little things that mean the difference between: "I have time to evaluate this" and "I don't know why this is getting in the way, but I have to finish this project so --disable (and then forget about it for a while)."

Just an idea; honestly, I'm just glad something like this exists. Thanks for the effort.

Re: Hotkey conflicts with IE

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback.

First, Debugbar hotkeys should be disabled on first install, so you should not have the problem after an install. I will have a look, maybe there is a bug in the installer on in DebugBar code.

Adding this information in the "After install" page can be very useful. You are right on this point.

I will try to improve this on the next release !

Re: Hotkey conflicts with IE

Well, thank you for your professional response. Since you intended for Debugbar to have its hotkeys not set (and mine came in that way), here's my software environment in case it was related:

Windows 2003 Server x64 R2, Service Pack 2 (converted to a workstation)
IE 7.0.5730.13  (which normally comes installed with enhanced security, now off)
IE Developer Toolbar (Microsoft)
Java 1.6.0_05
MS Office 12 (2007)
* OneNote has modified the toolbar slightly.

and one final item...as I was checking version numbers I found I had installed (and I don't know how I got this version so recently....):
* DebugBar 4.02

So, I checked your downloads, saw 5.02...installed, version verified, and all the hotkeys are disabled. Great. Note that I didn't try to uninstall the old version first; I figured it would warn me if necessary. (shrugs)

Again, thank you for the time and effort.

Re: Hotkey conflicts with IE

Fine.

The "shortkeys disabled" by default has been added after v4.02, that is why you had the problem.

As I received a lot of feedback like your comment, I decided to disable it, as it is now. That is why your v5.02 is ok.

And... stay tuned, as v5.1 will be launched soon ;-)
