IETester on Ubuntu under Wine

Hi

I was wondering if you have any plans to get IETester working with Wine on Linux? I've tried installing v.0.2.2 on Ubuntu 8.04 with a fresh install of Wine 1.0, the .exe installer completes without errors and the program launches but opening new tabs does nothing.

I've no idea how major the problems are- if you'd like me to try anything or provide more info, I'd be happy to help.

This is probably as much of a feature request as a bug, since I'm sure IETester was never intended to be run on Wine, but I'd find it very useful! There seems to be a niche for an app like this on Linux, since IEs4Linux seems to only support IEs 4/5/6 (though I'll investigate it further).

Re: IETester on Ubuntu under Wine

Hi,

I would like to have IETester running under wine (as well as OSX, using wine maybe).

I would try to install it on my ubuntu system and try to make it compliant on a future version.

Thanks for the feedback.

Re: IETester on Ubuntu under Wine

Hi,

I installed a xubuntu machine using Virtual Box to do some IETester tests under wine. Unfortunately, it is very very slow.

Just to launch IETester and get the main window, I need to way 5 or 6 minutes. Is it because I am running under a virtual machine ?

Is it slow on your side ?

Re: IETester on Ubuntu under Wine

Well, I just installed IETester v0.32 under Ubuntu 8.10 and it starts in about 30 seconds. After that, I can't really do anything. Only IE 5.5 and 6 are available, but choosing one gives a white tab without an adress bar.

Overall:
+ The application doesn't crash big_smile.
- The layout is wrong.
- Functionality isn't there.

I copied these messages from the console:

err:module:import_dll Library MFC42.DLL (which is needed by L"C:\\Programma Bestanden\\Core Services\\IETester\\6bscript.dll"
err:module:import_dll Library msls31.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\Programma Bestanden\\Core Services\\IETester\\7shtml.dll") not found
err:module:import_dll Library msls31.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\Programma Bestanden\\Core Services\\IETester\\8shtml.dll")

Also here's a screenshot:

Re: IETester on Ubuntu under Wine

Thanks for your feedback.

Do you know any debugging tool I can use to debug a win32 application under wine ?

Re: IETester on Ubuntu under Wine

Well, Wine comes with its own debugger. I don't have experience with it, but you can find information on the following sites:

http://www.winehq.org/site/docs/winedev-guide/debugger
http://wiki.jswindle.com/index.php/Debugging_Wine

Also, the people on http://forum.winehq.org/ might be able to help you out. I think you might even be able to gather people to finish the project sooner. This IETester is a real must have for *nix webdevelopers.

It turns out your application is already listed in the WineHQ Application DB:

http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p … p;iId=7039

Re: IETester on Ubuntu under Wine

Similar situation on my Mandriva 2008.1, wine 1.1.17.

At install I captured this from command line.
wine: Call from 0x7edffdc0 to unimplemented function ntoskrnl.exe.KeInitializeMutex, aborting
wine: Unimplemented function ntoskrnl.exe.KeInitializeMutex called at address 0x7edffdc0 (thread 001a), starting debugger...
Unhandled exception: unimplemented function ntoskrnl.exe.KeInitializeMutex called in 32-bit code (0x7edffe42).

It starts in less then half a minute, but IE 7 and IE 8 are not available (just like on Mondane's screenshot).

On run this could be critical (beside numerous "fixme" warnings from wine):
err:module:import_dll Library msls31.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\Program Files\\Core Services\\IETester\\7shtml.dll") not found
err:module:import_dll Library msls31.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\Program Files\\Core Services\\IETester\\8shtml.dll") not found

Nothing visible is rendered on opening with clicking any icon or using Command Line Arguments.

Re: IETester on Ubuntu under Wine

Hi,

There is no planning and I don't know if it's possible and when I will be able to work on it. So it can be in one month or in ten years :-O

Re: IETester on Ubuntu under Wine

I have tried running it on Ubuntu Hardy Heron too and could get as far as the interface, which is a little sluggish, but I am sure that can be fixed. Rest I can provide any help/feedback I can.

I am seeing errors for missing files which are already there. Does it require .Net libraries?
Thanks

Re: IETester on Ubuntu under Wine

Hi,
I'm currently working as a Web Developer at my university, and I, as well as those I work with, would love to be able to work in a Linux environment.  However, we need to be able to test things in IE.  So, I figured I would help provide as much info as I can for those who may be trying to make IETester compatible with Wine.

IETester started up in under 10 seconds.  However, it only gave me the option to Open IE5.5, and even then I was unable to navigate to any URLs.  I hope this helps.

Re: IETester on Ubuntu under Wine

Um guys. When you look at the requirements for IETester, it says that you need IE7 installed in XP.

Well, that's wine. Wine basically emulates XP. It also doesn't have any version of IE installed by default. The default IE that comes with wine is actually a version of Gecko. To install any version of IE, follow the instructions in the winehq website.

I'm going to install IE 7 and see if it works. Will report back to the forum.

Re: IETester on Ubuntu under Wine

Its worth pointing out that Wine allows you install separate versions of IE, each in their own Wine environment without needing to resort to a tool like IETester. Okay, so they won't be tabbed in a single window, but that isn't really the main issue for me. IETester exists to solve a problem for IE in Windows that isn't an issue for IE in Linux with Wine.

Having said that, it would be pretty cool to see it working in Wine. I wonder what the Wine forums would have to say about it?

Re: IETester on Ubuntu under Wine

That's what I was going to say.

I installed IE7 and IETester still did not work. I used the instructions on the wine webpage for IE7. Basically, you use winetricks (or winetools, I forget). Then I realized that the same technique will allow you to install IE6, IE7, *and* IE8 at the same time.

Unfortunately, IE8 was unusable. IE7 was buggy. IE6 was buggy but worked the best out of all three. As for IETester, that never worked at all. Note that there may still be hope---by installing as many of the native windows packages that IE uses using winetricks. I haven't tried that yet...I recall reading somewhere that if you install the right package, IE6/7/8 work better. (But I may be wrong)

Re: IETester on Ubuntu under Wine

I installed a virtual machine using Xubuntu box wine under some IETester testing. Unfortunately, this is very, very slow.Just launch IETester and get the main window, the way I need 5 or 6 minutes. Is it because I was running in a virtual machine?
