IETester is a free (both for personal and professional usage) WebBrowser that allows you to have the rendering and javascript engines of IE11, IE10, IE9, IE8, IE7 IE 6 and IE5.5 on Windows 8 desktop, Windows 7, Vista and XP, as well as the installed IE in the same process.

This is an alpha release, so feel free to post comments/bugs on the IETester forum.
Requirement : Windows 8 desktop, Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows XP with IE7 minimum (Windows XP/IE6 config has some problems and IE8 instance do not work under XP without IE7)
Note for IE10 : IE10 is not available on IETester if it is not the default IE version installed on the system. So IE10 is only available on Windows 8 machines.

Known problems and limitations :

• The Previous/Next buttons are not working properly
• Focus is not working properly
• javascript "alert" and "confirm" methods are not working
• The input type file is not working (the file selection dialog does not open)
• Java applets are not working
• Flash is not working on IE6 instance in user mode : A solution is to launch IETester as admin user and Flash will work.
• CSS Filters are not working correctly in user mode : A solution is to launch IETester as admin user and CSS Filters will work.
• windows.open does not return the newly created window but null (IETester limitation)

Another way to disable the version check is to create a DWORD value with the name "CheckUpdateFrequency" in one of the two following registry key:

with the value set to "4".

The HKEY_CURRENT_USER takes precedence over the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. The HKEY_CURRENT_USER Is the one updated by the UI in the IETester Options dialog box.

Note that IETester is 32 bits, so on 64 bits Windows versions, the registry paths are :

I'm using ExtJS and I'm actually rendering JS files. I return Content-Type: 'text/javascript' but I don't get my renderd JS in your list of available JS files. What is the problem? This is the response from the server:

Great workks. This add-on miss an JavaScript Object Inspector such FireBug ("..." is not very helpfull)

Another badly missing feature is the ability to add code breakpoints - Add this (and the object inspector) and you've got a great javascript debugger for IE.

This is really great because it catches the JS errors and actually reports the correct line number (imagine that) and the stack trace! This really has potential to take off. I would suggest you to include a way to see the JS pages and navigate through them, as well as debugging (breakpoints) features that others mentioned above. Other good features would be HTML inspector and being able to view HTTP requests. Thanks.

In IE7 (XPSP3) with Companion.JS v0.4.2 (and in previous versions) I often get the error "Document is not defined" (or similar errors) when opening a link in a new tab. If I refresh the page the page loads without erros

6 May 2010: What also would be nice is if users can create modules/addons for this.

This tab display the HTML document tags tree (the DOM) in the "Document" root entry of the tree. The other tree root entries ("Link", "Images", "Forms", "Style sheets") give you faster access to useful inner document elements.

By clicking on the right button over the DOM Tree, you open a menu which gives you the option to "Rebuild the DOM tree". This can be useulf when the web page is changed dynamically by scripts after download.

When you select an HTML tag entry in the DOM tree, this element is "flashed" in the Web Page and the data corresponding to the button selected is displayed. There are 5 buttons :

• Source : The tag source code will be displayed.
• Style : The tag style will be calculated and displayed
• Comp. Style : The tag somputed style (that is the resulting style after all the css rules and inline rules are applied) will be displayed.
• Layout : The tag layout will be displayed.

Last but not least, a target allow you to retrieve an element DIRECTLY in the Web Page ! : Click on the target and keep the left mouse button down, then navigate in the page and the HTML element behind the target will be flashed. When you release the button, the last selected element is selected in the DOM tree and all its attributes are displayed !

You can add here all the features you would like to have on future versions:

• Allow DebugBar to unpin from IE and to make it floating, or to pin it at the bottom instead of the left.

S. Stock (I'm using DebugBar v4.1b2)

• I would like to have a filter on tab http(s) : something like show all requests | show xhtml-requests only

• I would like to have the logging of http traffic always enabled even if Debugbar is not visible. Very often I wanted to see which files were loaded, but had debugbar closed... So I had to open it and then to reload the complete page.

like how firebug is doing, need to find a specific function or variable from entire scripts

3. If i click on a javascript function(in script tab) it should tell me the file(javascript file) name which contains that function

If Css editing will work as in developer toolbar in firefox, i will build a statue for your tribute :) For now the limitations are: 1) Not possible to add attrs to css 2) Changes not visible in realtime (pressing [enter] required) 3) Attrs presented in list, not as pure text
