Time to remove IE5.5 & 6?

Is anyone still testing for IE5.5 or IE6?

Re: Time to remove IE5.5 & 6?

Good question. I think IE5.5 is not used anymore, but I would not bet about IE6

Re: Time to remove IE5.5 & 6?

Many sites (including my own) have stopped supporting IE6.

Are you going to remove IE5.5?

Why not, I don't know yet. I will think about it for the next release.

Re: Time to remove IE5.5 & 6?

People still use IE6 here, it would be a trouble if IE6 support removed.

IE6 is still used in many places, unfortunately.
Especially because XP service-packs don't update the browser (ie6).

Re: Time to remove IE5.5 & 6?

When I look at my website statistics I have:-
IE8         30.1%
IE7         21.6%
IE6           3.5%
IE5.5        0.08%
FF          33.0%
Safari      5.4%
Chrome   2.1%
Mozilla     1.2%

On the basis of these figures, I am not looking to support IE5.5
Why not add some code to your site:-
<!--[if lt ie 6]>
<p>This website supports Microsoft Internet Explorer ver 6 and above.  It is suggested that you upgrade to ver 7 or 8.
<a href="http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/default.aspx">Microsoft Internet Explorer 8</a></p>
  <![endif]-->

This will only display the message if the viewer is using IE5.5 or below.

Re: Time to remove IE5.5 & 6?

Agree: ie5.5 is dead.
I usually add to my sites a message asking users running IE <= 6 to upgrade.

Re: Time to remove IE5.5 & 6?

Plz dont remove it. IE hacks vor CSS are inevitable. And many people would work with CSS frameworks like yaml and would know is the css ok in IE5 or smth like that. My self is searching for an BrowserTester like IETester but with all Browsers like, Opera5, 6 - 10, Netscape 4, IE4 - 9 and others. So plz dont remove it. In the name of other developers wink. By the way, the IETester is a testtool to test websites for IE Versions wink

Re: Time to remove IE5.5 & 6?

bugmenot,

Why do you want to support IE5.5!? It's ancient, and no one uses it.

Indeed, supporting IE <= 5.5 is like supporting Windows <= ME.

Re: Time to remove IE5.5 & 6?

As a web designer/developer, IE6 is the primary reason for using IETester. IE 5.5, on the other hand, is ancient and probably only a novelty at this point. Any removal of IE6 would drastically reduce the usefulness of this product. I would back that statement up with money too.

Re: Time to remove IE5.5 & 6?

Agreed please please don't remove IE6 it's the main thing that makes this app useful. I can view as IE9 8 or 7 using IE compatibility view / document mode / browser mode settings but IETester is the only way for me to test IE6! I don't use IE5.5 but I'm sure some do, so why get rid of it?

0.01% ... IMHO, no one should be concerned about IE5.5.

Re: Time to remove IE5.5 & 6?

Personally I love being able to test every single version of IE against my sites.
That way I KNOW the sites will work for everyone..

I would really love if ietester could also allow adding firefox, opea, safari and chrome that would be so neat.smile

Hi,

I also would like to add other browsers in the future, but I am focusing on IE first and would like to have those browsers fully working first before starting to work with other browsers integration.

Re: Time to remove IE5.5 & 6?

IE6 is still actively being used in the wild and developers are sometimes required to provide an enhanced experience for that browser. IETester is the only way I've found to test with IE6... and it's a great product. Thank You!

With the new development pattern of building websites using "progressive enhancement" I find it very useful to have IE5.5 available in IETester because it represents a browser which does not have sufficient capabilities to pass modern progressive enhancement tests and therefore is delivered a "basic experience". It is very handy to be able to test with a browser that will trigger the basic experience and test if all the functionality is working within the basic experience.

Search "Graded Browser Support" or "Progressive Enhancement" for more details on how to build websites this way.

For the time being, Lunascape might be interesting for you. It brings together the Trident (IE), Gecko (Firefox) and Webkit (Chrome, Safari) rendering engines.

Concerning the topic of the thread: Like most of the other posters I could easily do without IE5.5, but I wouldn't want to give up IE6 compatibility testing yet.

Cheers,
Jan

Re: Time to remove IE5.5 & 6?

I think a much better option than removing IE 5.5 would be to offer the option to hide it.  If .01% of web users use IE 5.5, and my company caters to that .01% (for instance), having IE 5.5 available is very important for me.   It turns out I have no IE 5.5 users, but I do have a large and important group of customers that uses IE 6, and I have no control over when they upgrade.  So if in another three years, they're still on IE 6, but providers of useful tools like IETester decide that everyone should upgrade, that means I'm out of luck.  It seems to me that you gain nothing by removing functionality, even if only a tiny percent of your users need it.

Re: Time to remove IE5.5 & 6?

Bumping this thread to show my opinion:
Remove IE5.5

IE5.5 is dead, if someone still have it, go update it. It's free. It's more than a decade. If your site have people that use it, demand them to update.

IE6 still have 7.1% of the market share, Microsoft is leading the IE6 Countdown project, where they want to drop it to less than 1%. While this is not achieved I guess it's better to keep the IE6 in IETester.

Re: Time to remove IE5.5 & 6?

Please keep IE5.5 !

I want my company website to be seen everywhere, even in places like Africa, Asia, Central America...

Remember, this is the places where we send our old computers to be recycled, and some find there way in schools, shanty towns, orphanages, and the like. These people won't bother upgrading their Windows or Explorer version!

So that's why I want to check how my website looks in IE5.5, 6, 7 etc... I'd love to have a Firefox or Netscape tester too! For the same reasons!

I'm pretty sure keeping IE5.5 won't add more work for you Fabrice, so if it ain't broke, don't kill it!
