Font rendering / size issues

Hi,  Firstly, thank you.  Great idea!  I have just started using IETester, but I can see that it will save me a lot of time.

OS=XP Pro, IE installed= 7, zoom level = 100% ( have tested others )

One problem I am having, and it may well just be ME...  is when I start any new tab in IETester,  'some' of the fonts - ( I can’t for certain identify a difference between those that are and those that are now )  on pages appear larger than they do if I open the same site in the installed version of IE.  This happens with all the tabs I have tested so far = IE6 IE7, IE8 and Default IE tabs.

I am aware of issues with font resizing, ems vs px etc ( not that I understand it 100% or have necessarily implemented best practices on the pages I am looking at ) but the fact that IE7 installed on my machine differs ( and a second machine Server2003, IE7 ) to the way both the default and IE7, 8, 6 etc tabs in IETester  display, seems to me to suggest that there is a difference with the way IETester renders ( or sets ) the base font size, or perhaps that it is failing to 'resize' it based on ems and body % CSS.

I have checked with  ‘reset to medium’ turned on and off, but there seem to be no difference.

Sample URLs:

http://www.jhc.org.au ( fonts not enlarging )
http://www.channelenablers.com ( central text IS enlarging, menus are not )
http://www.izigraphics.com.au ( text and menu resizing, also JS errors?? but not worries about that at the moment :)

I am just wondering if perhaps this is an issue you have seen before .... Or if I am just making a silly mistake / don’t know enough etc.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.. If I can get IETester working for me, it will save me server VM installed :)

Many thanks in advance!

Re: Font rendering / size issues

Hi,

Thank you for your report, but it is not very clear.
You say there are differences between different IE versions into IETester compared to the installed IE.
The installed ie can ONLY be compared to the same IE version instance into IETester.
So, if a web site is rendering differently in installed IE7 and in IETester IE7, there is a problem. If a web site is rendering differently in installed IE7 and in IETester IE6, we can't compare anything.

I tried with "http://www.channelenablers.com" and the page is rendered the same in IE7 and IETester IE7 tab.

Also, I tested under XP SP2 with IE7 installed, and I suppose you have XP SP2 and not XP because IE7 needs SP2.

Re: Font rendering / size issues

Hi,

I can reproduce the problem on my VistaSP1 /IE8 machine, but strangely it is working on a XPSP2/IE7 machine.

Re: Font rendering / size issues

Hi Again, and thanks for the speedy reply.

Sorry, yes I am using SP2.  Lets forget the other IETester versions smile .. that does confuse things..

IE 7 Installed and IETester IE7 tab instance are displaying differently. ( The 'Default IE' instance also displays the same as the IE7 instance - that is different to installed IE7 )

I have been able to re-create the effect I am getting ( That is make my installed IE7 and IETester display the same  ) by selecting View > Text Size > Largest in my installed IE7 ... which seems to point to IETester somehow setting the selectable text size to largest ( or not controling it correctly. )

Perhaps a setting elsewhere in windows/ie setting. Any thoughts?

Re: Font rendering / size issues

Ok... I have found a fix for this if anyone else is having this issues. ( but maybe its just me smile

In IE7 - Internet Options > Advanced -  There is an option to Reset text size to medium for new windows and tabs.  I am not sure what the default, but mine was not selected ( Off ) .. I selected this option, re-started IETester and things now work as expected.

I also identified why some fonts did not resize.  It was simply that these fonts where set with px sizes, which will never resize with IE selectable font rendering anyway, so that was my issues, nothing to do with IETester.

So, just update the option in IE and you're away.

Again, thanks for a fantastic tool, and speedy helpful support.

Re: Font rendering / size issues

Thanks for sharing your fix !

This makes sense as most of the IE options are shared with IETester.

Re: Font rendering / size issues

I am defiantly having problem with the font size. Bare in mind I am a developer so I know what it is supposed to be like pretty much every browser, I test in all the main ones. I had MultipleIE prior to this and it rendered ok. I switched to IE tester because when I install IE8 the inputs could not receive focus.

My problem is that some of the fonts are appearing way to big.

If I fire up IE7 on it own it renders them fine. The above fix is not relevant to this.

Example IETester:
http://picasaweb.google.com/backslashx0 … 0750327970

Example IE 7
http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/FU … directlink

It is not zoom because zoom is normal and some text correct size.

Re: Font rendering / size issues

I am definitely having problem with users who can't read the announcment  that says that they should at least provide their os and installed ie version.

Also, your post is confusing because you said you installed IE8, and then you are talking about firing IE7... I don't understand this.

Re: Font rendering / size issues

Which directions ? I never said that someone should install IE7. I'm lost. I am not sure to undertand.

If I am correct your platform is XP SP3 with IE7, is this right ? And the url to test is http://www.google.com , right ?

Re: Font rendering / size issues

Windows Vista or Windows XP with IE7 (Windows XP/IE6 config has some problems and IE8 instance do not work under XP without IE7)

Re: Font rendering / size issues

IE8 is also fine. IE7/IE8 are required in order to have the "IE8 instance" (that is the IE8 tab) enabled under IETester.

So, there is no need to downgrade from IE8 to IE7.

It's up to you.

I just tested on an XPSP3 with IE7 and IETester with a IE7 tab, and the real IE7 are displaying wwwgoogle.com with the same font.

Re: Font rendering / size issues

The page doesn't matter any page will do.

I appreciate your effort developing this. Can't help but think you are really up against it though. I thought I would test some JavaScript given that the fonts are wrong. That is gone caput too, it seems.

I don't know it this is down to he nitty gritty of registry.

Everything worked ok with Multiple IE. Just when I installed IE8 (which they told me to do last) then couldn't use text inputs the tex areas.

Re: Font rendering / size issues

Upgrading hasn't helped. Uninstalling IETester the re-installing didn't help.

Re: Font rendering / size issues

IE : 8.0.6001.18702

OS : Vista Ultimate SP1

IETester : 0.3.3

Website currently in build : http://79.170.44.107/jaswebsitebuild.co.uk/

-----------------------------------

I thought I would add to this as I am experiencing font size issues.
I am developing a site in Joomla and in the css I am trying to implement ems for font size rather than px or pt.

I have got hold of a computer running IE6 and compared the screen on this with IETester IE6 rendering, and Multiple IEs on an XP machine

What seems to be happening is the H1 and P tags (which use ems in the css) are all larger in IETester compared with IE6 on the other machines. The other 2 computers are displaying the same (correct - compared to Firefox and Safari on this Vista machine) font size.

I initially got this problem across all browsers when I first started trying to use ems. This was down to me having issues with css inheritance when placing the text within a <p> tag which was in turn sat within a table ( <td> tag)

By setting the <p> tag ems size and then setting <td> to inherit I got it sorted!
Looking at IETester results for IE6 rendering, it looks just like I used to get before sorting the inheritance.

I love the IETester concept and would love to use it and ditch the other machines!
Hopefully this font issue some of us seem to be experiencing can be sorted

Hope this helps

Re: Font rendering / size issues

Hi,

I tested http://79.170.44.107/jaswebsitebuild.co.uk/ and I don't see the difference between IETester and IE6.
I'm not a font expert, so if you can post a screenshot showing the difference between IETester and IE6 it could help.

Thanks.

Re: Font rendering / size issues

Hi

Below are some screenshots to show the differences between IE6 on an XP machine with SP2 and IE Tester IE6

Also are screenshots showing IE8 comparisons which look to be doing the same.
IE8 was taken on my Vista machine (spec mentioned in previous post)

Many Thanks
Peter

Re: Font rendering / size issues

I tested on my Vista SP2/IE8 machine, and IETester IE6 tab is rendering correctly (that is the same as a real IE6 rendering).

Re: Font rendering / size issues

Hi PJMFD,

I think I've had the same problem as you on my computer. The solution I found was this... as well as IETester I also have Multiple IE and IE8 installed. Looking around I found that IE6 had the text-size (on the View menu) set as Larger. I changed this to Normal and refreshed my pages in IETester and was surprised to see IETester was back to normal. This worked for me... I guess you might want to check this in any other versions of IE you have installed.

Hope this helps you find a solution to your problem.

C.

Re: Font rendering / size issues

Hi C

Thanks for your feedback.
I have found that the latest version of IETester seems to have done the trick for me.
It now has a facility to alter the text size - found on the Dev Tools tab. I set this so the text was displaying the correct size and I haven't had any further issues.
Sounds as though what you have done on your machine is now built into the program!

Cheers
Peter

That's good, as it was my primary purpose of adding this text size feature ;-)
