Technical difference between "IE8" mode and "Default" mode?

We are trying to get an internal website working in Windows 7 sp1 with IE8 that works in Windows XP with IE8

We are the client support team as our website developers cannot work on the project for 4-5 months so we are not very knowledgable about website scripts/authentication but we need to get our users upgraded to Windows 7 and this is stopping many of them.

We can get the website working in IE8 mode in IETester but it gives an authentication error, same as in actual IE8, when we use "default" mode.
So we were wondering what the difference was so we can maybe fix/bypass the error in actual IE8

Website is a KANA IQ internal site and is HTTPS
error is following in IE8 and in "Default" view in IETester

------------------------
Error 401--Unauthorized
From RFC 2068 Hypertext Transfer Protocol -- HTTP/1.1:
10.4.2 401 Unauthorized
The request requires user authentication. The response MUST include a WWW-Authenticate header field (section 14.46) containing a challenge applicable to the requested resource. The client MAY repeat the request with a suitable Authorization header field (section 14.8). If the request already included Authorization credentials, then the 401 response indicates that authorization has been refused for those credentials. If the 401 response contains the same challenge as the prior response, and the user agent has already attempted authentication at least once, then the user SHOULD be presented the entity that was given in the response, since that entity MAY include relevant diagnostic information. HTTP access authentication is explained in section 11.

Thanks for any info/help you can give.

Re: Technical difference between "IE8" mode and "Default" mode?

Hi,

The "Default" mode on IE is opening a tab with the installed IE version on your system. So if you are on Windows 7 with IE9 installed, the default mode will be IE9. If you have Windows 7 with IE10 installed, it will be IE10.

So if I have Windows 7 sp1 (64-bit) with IE8 installed, what is the the difference between "IE8" mode and "Default" mode?

Is it using different files?

Is using different "zone" settings for Javascript, security, NTLM etc?

Is it using different "advanced" settings?

Does it use different "local policy" settings such as network security etc?

Thanks for any info you can give.

What Fabrice tried to explain is that "Default" is nothing but a handy shortcut to whatever regular IE version you have in your computer. It isn't a "mode". If you have IE8 installed, clicking on the "IE8" button will do exactly the same as clicking on the "Default" one.

Thanks, that indeed does make sense and answers the 1st 2 questions.

So other than the "Default" link each "mode" uses special files briefly mentioned on http://www.my-debugbar.com/wiki/IETester/HowDoesItWork

Can anyone answer the remaining questions I had?

- Is using different "zone" settings for Javascript, security, NTLM etc?

- Is it using different "advanced" settings?

- Does it use different "local policy" settings such as network security etc?

No, all those settings are shared between the different modes and the default IE as well.
