IETester is a free WebBrowser that allows you to have the rendering and javascript engines of IE9 preview, IE8, IE7 IE 6 and IE5.5 on Windows 7, Vista and XP, as well as the installed IE in the same process.

This is an alpha release, so feel free to post comments/bugs on the IETester forum.
Requirement : Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows XP with IE7 minimum (Windows XP/IE6 config has some problems and IE8 instance do not work under XP without IE7)
Note for IE9 : IETester installer does not include IE9 files, so you will need to install IE9 preview and copy files manually : See How To install IE9 under IETester (IE9 Preview requires Vista SP2 or Windows 7).

Known problems and limitations :

• The Previous/Next buttons are not working properly
• Focus is not working properly
• Java applets are not working
• Flash is not working on IE6 instance in user mode : A solution is to launch IETester as admin user and Flash will work.
• CSS Filters are not working correctly in user mode : A solution is to launch IETester as admin user and CSS Filters will work.

Console API feature

I'm using ExtJS and I'm actually rendering JS files. I return Content-Type: 'text/javascript' but I don't get my renderd JS in your list of available JS files. What is the problem? This is the response from the server:

Great workks. This add-on miss an JavaScript Object Inspector such FireBug ("..." is not very helpfull)

Another badly missing feature is the ability to add code breakpoints - Add this (and the object inspector) and you've got a great javascript debugger for IE.

Can we get a keyboard shortcut to open the window? Thanks!

This is really great because it catches the JS errors and actually reports the correct line number (imagine that) and the stack trace! This really has potential to take off. I would suggest you to include a way to see the JS pages and navigate through them, as well as debugging (breakpoints) features that others mentioned above. Other good features would be HTML inspector and being able to view HTTP requests. Thanks.

In IE7 (XPSP3) with Companion.JS v0.4.2 (and in previous versions) I often get the error "Document is not defined" (or similar errors) when opening a link in a new tab. If I refresh the page the page loads without erros

Starting with IETester version 0.4.3, IE9 preview can be integrated into IETester by following those install steps :

1. Install IETester version 0.4.3 or newer version.
2. Install IE9 preview (click on "Install the Preview" button from this page)
3. Open two explorer windows. On the first window, go to C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer Platform Preview\ folder, and on the second window, go to C:\Program Files\Core Services\IETester\ie9 :
   
4. Copy the folder iepreview.exe.local from C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer Platform Preview\ to C:\Program Files\Core Services\IETester\ie9 :
   
5. In the C:\Program Files\Core Services\IETester\ie9 folder, rename the folder iepreview.exe.local to ietester.ie9.exe.local :
   
6. Done ! You don't even need to restart IETester, the IE9 button should become active after a few seconds.

Companion.JS

Download and run the Companion.JS installer.

A Microsoft Script Debugger Engine

In order to work, Companion.JS needs a Microsoft Script Debugger Engine.
If you have one of the following software installed, you will already have this component installed :

• MS Script Debugger (scd10en.exe)
• MS Office (Setup Group: Office Tools/HTML Source Editing/Web Scripting)
• MS Visual Studio
• Platform SDK
• Remote Components Setup

If you don't one of those components installed, you can install the free Microsoft Script Debugger. It is free but cannot be redistributed, that's why it is not included in Companion.JS installer.

Internet Explorer

You'll need to tell Internet Explorer to enable the javascript debugger :

In Tools > Internet Options, select the Advanced tab and make sure to un-tick both check boxes:

• Disable script debugging (Internet Explorer)
• Disable script debugging (Others)

Trouble shooting

Install

If you want to make sure that CJS is properly installed go to Tools > Toolbars > Explorer Bar, Companion.JS should be there (and can be called from there as a matter of fact).

Debugger

If Companion.JS is not working, you can check its status by going to the About Box. Then you can copy/paste the information text and ask for some help on the forum.

BHO not registered

If the Companion.JS BHO is not registered (check this forum thread for more info), you can use this registry file to manually create the registry keys for the BHO.

Don't forget to change the file path to the CompanionJS.dll in this file : The current value is C:\\Archivos de programa\\Core Services\\Companion.JS\\CompanionJS.dll
